Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory disorder of the skin involving the pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and their sebaceous glands). It affects mainly the teenagers and young adults, although 10-20% of adults may continue to be affected by it. It is more common in males than in females. Mostly found on face, upper arms, trunk and back, the major concern is regarding the appearance.

Causes

It occurs by hypersensitivity of the sebaceous glands to a normal circulating level of androgens, which are worsened by P. acnes and inflammation. Causes includes the following:

• Genetics in 80% of cases
• Certain medications like steroids, anticonvulsants and lithium.
• Excess exposure to sunlight
• Wearing shoulder pads, headbands, backpacks, etc which are tight.
• Endocrine disorders like PCOS and pregnancy.

Factors which can aggravate acne include:

• Food with high sugar content like dairy products, chocolate, junk food, etc
• Oil-based cosmetics
• Pre-menstrual period
• Severe anxiety and anger

Management

In severe cases, acne can lead to permanent scarring and hence it needs early treatment. Doctors can easily diagnose acne clinically. Some cases may require hormone level assessment as well.

Proper skincare and dietary measures are recommended for acne treatment and prevention. These include washing skin not more than twice daily, using fragrance-free moisturizer, using oil-free cosmetics, and avoiding high sugar content in diet.

Action of Ingredients:

Echinacea angustifolia: This remedy is indicated in septic conditions. They may be result of an auto - infection, defective elimination or from poisons introduced from without. In bed sores, chronic ulcerations, furuncles and carbuncles, it is of service both locally and internally.

Bellis perennis: Excellent remedy for sprains and bruises. Externally, in naevi, acne and boils all over. Exudations, stasis, swelling, come within the range of this remedy. Ecchymosis, swelling, very sensitive to touch. For the venous congestion due to mechanical causes. Hematoma. Red papules and blisters. Boils with itching and burning sensation.

Hamamelis virginica: For Bluish chilblains, Phlebitis, Purpura, Varicose veins and ulcers, Burns, Ecchymosis and Traumatic inflammations.

Calendula officinalis: This agent has been extensively employed for its local influence in lacerated wounds and open sores, where it relieves the pain and soreness and favours phagocytosis and healing. For the treatment of carbuncles.

Berberis aquifolium: It is useful in persistent acne, pimples, and roughness of the skin of the face, that are not dependent upon uterine or ovarian irritation. In eczema capitis, and genitals with pruritus, and in scaly eczema, and in chronic cases of "scald head," it acts very kindly. In very rough, scaly skins, it has given favorable results.

Indications: Helps relieve Acne with scarring, Venous congestion/Bluish discoloration, Pustular eruptions, Pigmentation disorders, Boils & Pimply, dry, rough, scaly skin with itching.

Application: Apply externally twice daily to properly cleaned & dried affected portion.
