Sprain or a torn ligament is the stretching or tearing of ligament within a joint caused by an injury to the joint. It occurs most commonly in ankle, knee or wrist but can affect any joint. Most of the sprains are mild and cause minor swelling and bruise. Severe sprains can involve complete tears, ruptures or fractures which require surgical fixation.

Management of sprains involves following the acronym RICE within the first 24 hours of injury :

Rest - Joint should be immobilised and given proper rest

Ice - Application of ice on the joint 3-4 times a day for 10-15 mins at a time can help reduce swelling and pain.

Compression - Dressing, bandages or wraps can be used to immobilise the sprain and provide support. More pressure should be applied to distal end of injury to help in the circulation of blood.

Elevation - Keeping the sprained joint elevated can reduce swelling.

Strain is an acute or chronic soft tissue injury to a muscle, tendon or both. The muscle or tendon overstretches and tears partially from a sudden increase in duration, intensity or frequency of activity. Strains affects the foot, leg or back most commonly. Management involves following the PRICE acronym.

Protection: Apply soft padding to minimize impact with objects.

Rest: Rest is necessary to accelerate healing and reduce the potential for re-injury.

Ice: Apply ice to induce vasoconstriction, which will reduce blood flow to the site of injury.

Compression: Wrap the strained area with a soft-wrapped bandage to reduce further diapedesis and promote lymphatic drainage.

Elevation: Keep the strained area as close to the level of the heart as is possible in order to promote venous blood return to the systemic circulation.

Action of Ingredients:

Arnica montana: The remedy is indicated following mechanical injuries, strains, and wrenching of muscles. As its action is upon the muscular tissue, it is frequently of service in myalgia that is the result of over - exertion, or the use of weakened muscles.

Arnica is pharmacologically proven for arthritis, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-oxidant, wound healing and post operative healing properties. The analgesic and antiinflammatory property of Arnica Montana has been attributed to Helenalin.

Trauma in all its forms, and the recent or remote effects injuries are covered by this remedy. It produces conditions upon the system quite similar to those resulting from injuries, falls, blows, contusions. A muscular tonic. Useful for thrombosis and hematocele. Limbs and body ache as if beaten, joints feel as if sprained. Bed feels too hard or full of lumps. Rheumatism of muscles and tendons, especially of back and shoulders.
